Tess must have weighed less than fifty pounds.
Logan had felt helpless when he’d discovered everyone in Deb’s room. But not now. Not as he cradled Tess in his arms and carried her downstairs and into her bedroom. His niece had been a trembling bundle of nerves when he picked her up. By the time he tried to set Tess down, she was no longer shaking.
“Don’t let me go,” Tess begged, her face tucked into his neck.
Logan sat down with Tess on her bed, turning her in his arms so that he could see her face before she buried her little nose in his chest and used his T-shirt as a tissue.
“Hey, now. It’s over.” What in the heck had possessed Thea to clean Deb’s room, much less let the girls in? Logan could feel the slow burn of anger in his gut. He’d have words with Thea again later as soon as Tess was okay.
All these months, Tess had been such a trooper—a bitter trooper, but a trooper nonetheless. He hadn’t seen her cry once since September, not once until today. Even though she’d spent months with Wes, Logan was willing to bet she hadn’t cried there, either.
After several minutes, Tess’ sobs turned into hiccups.
“I think we should agree not to go in there anymore,” he said.
Tess sucked air in ragged gasps. “I thought Mom was upstairs.”
Logan bit off the oath he wanted to spit out.
“I heard a noise and I thought she was upstairs.”
He didn’t want to listen anymore. He did not want to talk about Deb.
“The door was open…and…and…there was light coming through. Hannah thought it was an angel.”
More like the devil’s spawn in rainbow gear.
“And then we went inside and there were so many pictures of her. Everywhere. I’d almost forgotten what she looked like, but I couldn’t look at the pictures because she wasn’t there.” This last word spiraled into a wail and Tess dissolved into tears again.
Logan wondered how he was going to turn his niece’s anguish into something that didn’t hurt quite so bad. All he could think of to say was, “I know, kidlet. I miss her, too.”
“And sometimes,” she gasped, “in the middle of the night, I can’t remember what her voice sounds like.”
Oh, God.
“What if someday I don’t remember her? What if—”
“Hold on, hold on a second.” Logan had to stop Tess before this runaway train took down all the protective walls he’d erected around his heart. “We have pictures and video somewhere. You’ll always have that.” He’d taken those mementos away from her and Hannah because he thought it would help them deal with their grief. It had made his pain more bearable. He hadn’t realized it would only make Tess’ pain that much worse.
Tess was silent for a few moments. Her breathing grew steadier. Then she whispered, “Sometimes I hate her for dying.”
Logan’s body stiffened. He’d harbored the
